This fiery, tangy, and zesty herbal tonic is a classic in the world of natural wellness. I love how it packs a punch with ingredients that warm you up from the inside out. But what exactly is fire cider? And why do I love making and using it so much? Let me spill all the spicy details!

What is Fire Cider?

Fire cider is a herbal infusion made with apple cider vinegar and all sorts of spicy, tangy, and immune-boosting goodies like garlic, horseradish, ginger, and turmeric. After letting it soak for a few weeks, you’ve got yourself a powerful, flavorful tonic to support your body in fighting off colds, boosting energy, and adding a zing to your recipes!

What Is It Used For?

Fire cider is like the superhero of natural tonics! People use it to:

  • Boost the immune system during cold and flu season.
  • Aid digestion after heavy meals.
  • Clear congestion when you're feeling stuffed up.
  • Energize on sluggish days.
  • It can even be used as a base for salad dressings or marinades!

A Brief History of Fire Cider

This concoction has its roots in traditional folk medicine, but it was popularized in the 1970s by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. She wanted to make herbal remedies accessible, fun, and full of flavor! Her fire cider recipe was all about promoting health with simple, potent ingredients. Decades later, people still swear by it for immune support, digestive health, and overall wellness.

Rosemary Gladstar has numerous books and courses available online at her website  Here is her famous Fire Cider book. There are numerous recipes for Fire Cider depending on your taste and available ingredients. Each ingredient in mine has a purpose. Feel free to make adjustments by adding or removing ingredients.

The Health Benefits of Each Ingredient

    My Delicious Fire Cider Recipe

Here’s how I whip up my fire cider in a 64 oz mason jar, using some of my favorite immune-boosting ingredients! Seal with the best lids! In the end, this will make about 30 oz of strained Fire Cider. Be sure to squeeze and press as much juice as possible at the end!

    Ingredients:

    • 1/2 cup fresh turmeric root, sliced
    • 1 cup ginger, sliced
    • 1 orange, thinly sliced (blood orange is my fav)
    • 3 cinnamon stick
    • 1 tablespoon mineral salt
    • 12 whole cloves
    • 10 peppercorns
    • 1/4 cup dried rosehips
    • 1/2 cup grated horseradish root
    • 1 head garlic, peeled and smashed
    • 1 red onion, sliced
    • 2 jalapenos peppers (optional for extra heat!)
    • Apple cider vinegar with the mother, about 1L

    After infusion:

    • Honey, Local and Raw (to taste after straining)

    Directions:

    1. Mix all the ingredients (except honey) in a large mixing bowl.
    2. Toss all the ingredients into your mason jar.
    3. Fill the jar with apple cider vinegar, making sure everything is submerged.
    4. Seal it tight, shake it up, and let it infuse for 3-4 weeks in a dark space. Shake it daily for extra love!
    5. After a few weeks, strain out the solids and add honey to taste for a bit of sweetness.

A Tips! Use your Ninja Blender to slice and grate quickly although it doesn't prevent the tears from the garlic, onions, and horseradish. A funnel to add the ingredients to the mason jar is very helping.

How to Know When It’s Ready

Your fire cider will be ready after about 3-4 weeks of soaking. You’ll know it’s ready when the liquid is infused with rich golden color, the aroma is strong and spicy, and the flavors have melded together into a tangy, punchy tonic. Taste-test a little to check if the balance is right for you—if it’s spicy, tangy, and gives you a kick, it’s perfect!

How and When to Use Fire Cider

      • Daily Tonic: Take 1-2 tablespoons straight when you feel a little under the weather.
      • Morning Boost: Add it to warm water with honey for an energizing start to your day.
      • Cooking Magic: Use it as a tangy base for salad dressings or marinades.
      • Digestive Aid: A spoonful before meals can help kick start digestion.

Whether it's cold season, a lazy afternoon, or just because you love that zing, fire cider is your flavorful friend. With its history rooted in tradition and its benefits proven over time, it’s the kind of tonic that makes you feel like a kitchen alchemist.

So why not give it a try? Your immune system, taste buds, and digestion will thank you.
